In particular, please help "The Big Mo" drive-in win a digital projector.

There was an article in today's local paper that talked about the local-to-this-area Monetta Drive-in (affectionately known as "The Big Mo") needing to upgrade their projectors to digital format by the time they stop distributing first-run movies in 35mm film format which could come as early as the end of this year or early next year. They have 3 projectors needing upgrading at a cost of $70-80K EACH. Yes, they have 3 showfields, which is rather uncommon today. So it's a big undertaking.

With this in mind, it's easy to see that the many of the approximately 350+ drive-ins left in America that haven't already gone digital will face severe financial dilemmas concerning upgrades and possibly could close down. Ironically, the Honda corporation (who'd have thunk it, right?) is sponsoring a contest to give your favorite American drive-in a chance to win a digital projector. A total of five projectors are expected to be given away. This won't keep them all going, but it's certainly a help.

All I ask is you take just a bit of your time and if you have a cell phone and/or computer with internet access, you can help vote for "The Big Mo" to win. From now until Sept 9 the polls remain open. Of course, if you feel like you want to financially contribute, you can do that too.

Go to http://projectdrivein.com/#vote_52 or text Vote52 to 444999 for "The Big Mo" to win a digital projector. You can vote once on the website and once on your cellphone per day, so remember after you vote today, do it again tomorrow and every day up until Sept 9. The drive-in owners would appreciate it. On the internet site, there's a lot of information about the contest and ways you can help spread the word.

And if you don't vote for "The Big Mo", then at the very least vote for your favorite drive-in.

I don't normally participate in things like this, but something that's uniquely and iconic American, as well as being one of the last of the relatively cheap and fun family outing experiences, deserves a bit of my time. If you're a baby-boomer or older, I'd bet at least ONCE in your life you attended a drive-in and can remember how simple the fun was. Help keep that opportunity available to the generation of kids today. Don't let it go the way of full-service gas stations. Please vote! If you don't vote, then at least spread the word.

Thanks!!
