I read that they propose to make all roads in Calgary 30 kph.....that is 18.6 mph for you guys south of the border.

It's the snow. The first whiff of cold and the first sight of the white stuff and the safety-crats and the millenials go into collective mass brain fart mode. If it was a purely winter time exercise for the purpose of diminishing the number of accidents due to driver stupidity and some inane need to have to drive the posted speed limit or faster, even if the roads and climate conditions would say otherwise, then it might have some merit. Problem is, some do-gooder would look at the results from the winter and try to get the restrictions applied all year round; "Just for their own safety". The other possibility is that today is election day in Canada, and all the parties are trying to kiss a** in search of votes. This might be some petty bureaucrap trying to suck up to his employers by suggesting this piece of stupidity. GOVERNMENT GOVERNS BEST THAT GOVERNS LEAST! Not sure who first made the comment but it is appropriate
And on a side note, German government just rejected a 80mph/130kph speed limit on the Autobahn proposed by the greenies 
Here they recently reduced the speed limit in school zones from 40 kph to 30 kph...is that maybe what it is?
Same here They put bike lanes absolutely everywhere.
Turned 4 lanes roads (2 each way) into one each way and 2 bike lanes
Made the speed limit 25mph
On top of that they took up what little parking spaces there are and put these Rent-A-Bike docks into them

+1. Here too. The local snow plow operators hate those islands. Makes plowing the main streets a pain the patoot. And as for the cyclists, use the bike paths, cycle on the correct side of the street, obey the traffic laws? HA!! Fuggedaboditt.
They painted bike lanes all over the place a few years ago here. Dumbass mayor earned the nickname "Bicycle Bill". Half of the bike lanes don't even get used and bicyclists still get hit by cars all the time. All the bike lanes do is **** up traffic.
