popping through the carb

then it could be a valve adjustment too tight or a burnt valve....you can remove one plug wire at a time and try to start it to see which cylinders are backfiring through the carb.......as far as the wires go have you made sure they are separated so your not getting any crossfire induction?

if you want to check the adjustment on the valves use this and it'll be alot quicker

0 deg TDC, both number one valves shut.

Adjust the #1 exhaust valve
Adjust the #1 intake valve
Adjust the #3 exhaust valve
Adjust the #5 intake valve
Adjust the #7 intake valve
Adjust the #2 intake valve
Adjust the #4 exhaust valve
Adjust the #8 exhaust valve
Now rotate the engine 360 degrees. The mark on the balancer should be back at the TDC mark. Keep in mind that this is not the TDC where #1 would be firing! It's where #6 would fire.
Adjust the #3 intake valve
Adjust the #5 exhaust valve
Adjust the #7 exhaust valve
Adjust the #2 exhaust valve
Adjust the #4 intake valve
Adjust the #6 exhaust valve
Adjust the #6 intake valve
Adjust the #8 intake valve

ok got it to run yesterday! like crap.... for everyone that said it was 180 out, u were right. idk how i did that but hey mistakes happen. Now it will start and barely idle and still will give a pop through the carb, wont take much fuel and starts backfireing if u rev it. If u try and move the timing it just either backfires or spits through the carb and dies so im gonna set the rockers and try again. pontiacgp thanks for that info thats very helpful.

In addition to the above you could have a clogged / bad fuel filter or your carb could be out of adjustment. On my 283 I had a sintered fuel filter (non-paper) and I was getting the same thing, would idle but as soon as I pressed on the gas, fuel would spit out the carb and it would backfire. Changed the filter and everything was good.
