Por-15 Suggestions

My nephew uses this stuff at work and says it only sticks to rust. I was going to do the frame and the pans on my El Camino to preserve it, but there isn’t much rust. I’m definitely not complaining about that but I if it’s not going to stick well I would rather find a better option this stuff ain’t cheap.

Should I just knock as much rust off that I candegrease it and rattle can it with some rustoleum. Any suggestions here’s a few pictures

it'll stick if you use degreaser, then metal-prep. i media blasted my whole frame, carefully followed the instructions and it came out great.

i think metal prep is the key.

POR 15 worked OK but didn't stop rust for me. Their silver high temp coating never cured on my exhaust manifolds, ever, stayed soft. I will probably use the can I have on the underneath of my 70S, foam brush is my plan, maybe my 2.1mm HVLP gun and thinning it to spray to get everywhere.

I did the wagon's floor completely in POR-15, and half the floor in the Monte - plus many parts over the years. I have had mixed results over the years... but it basically works fine.

And as mentioned a couple of holes in the lid, material portioned out as needed, and plugged with some self tapping screws will seal the can up just fine for years of use.

Yeah he said he uses the metal prep, I’ll talk with him some more, because I just watch the por15 application video and he said it works on seasoned metal. He demonstrated it on a new gas tank skid plate. Thanks for the replies I appreciate it.

i as well use por15. and coated everything i could with it. even the engine. dry time does sux.i as well brushed it on and sprayed it on you cant tell any difference. but never knew the had a quick dry additive . thanks for the info. i got more parts i will be spraying and getting the quick dry additive .

I’ve been using the quick dry additive in the last year along with the 4oz. cans of POR 15. 20 drops per can and you can handle it later that day. Instead of the 1-2 days later. I sprayed it once, unless I have a downdraft booth, I’ll never do it again. I used a fullface resperator with real good chemical filters that we use at work for certain asbestos abatement projects . That stuff will kill you if your not carefull. Brushing it on is the only way I’ll use it.

Top coat while it's still tacky. POR makes a semigloss finish coat. This stuff does not survive UV. Turns grey and chalky like our interiors, just faster. Agree on the Marine Clean and Metal Prep. Both good for adhesion and durability. Grease and oil have to be gone first.

The irony in using Marine Clean is it starts oxidation, Metal Ready converts it to zinc phosphate (?) and etches the surface, which allows the paint to stick. Almost like it was designed as a system.
