Seems like is a hot topic lately so I hope this helps. I'm working with Chevy parts cataloges, covering '80-'88 (O ring type) since it will cover the MC SS where alot of the 800 boxes are sourced from.
The base 800 p/n is 7848137, used in A (all '80-'82), B ('80-'90), G ('82-'88), list pitman arm 7837648 to be used when replacing a 605 box
The sport 800 p/n is 7843135, used in G ('83-'88) (MC SS YG5, Z65)
This is an odd listed 800, p/n 7848138, GZ (2.3D)(exc sport pkg Z65) (Saw in a Buick catalog w/H.D. suspension.)
There is a B 800 box p/n 7833133 ('82-'84 9C1, '86-'90 7B3), unknown ratio
This is the pump listed for SBC V6/V8 p/n 7839787, used in G ('82-'88, all), B ('82-'88, all)
The earlier pump used is p/n 7833224 used A ('80-'81, all), B ('80-'81,w/ A/C)
I have not come across any different p/n for pumps regarding RPO's for sport, heavy duty, or standard suspension or steering performance.

thought provoking, i wonder if this box was put in the gnx to keep the tires from rubbing. maybe the 2.3d is the number of turns for the steering wheel, lock to lock.
the irocs and trans am used a similar box to keep the big 16" tires from rubbing.

Question, is these pumps better than using the jeep grand Cherokee steering box? If so does anyone have the part number for an 84 ss Monte Carlo with the 305sbc? Thanks for any advice or assistance in advance.

This is the pump listed for SBC V6/V8 p/n 7839787, used in G ('82-'88, all), B ('82-'88, all)
Here it is. Same pump regardless of engine/suspension.

Good info but the way you can tell the difference in the boxes is the stamp on the front cover.

Unfortunately 99.9% on the stamps are washed off or will become washed off after you clean the cover trying to see the stamp.

Another great idea use the same part number on everything but change the internals so they are all different,

YAY GM!!!!

The 7848138 box is listed as for H.D. suspension for the LC2/vin 7 3.8 turbo engines '86-'87.

Pontiac used the 7848138 box in '81 w/ Y99, '82-'87 w/ F41. Looks like 2wd S trucks also used this box from '82-'94(?).
7843135 was used for Pontiac w/ FE3, Olds '83-'84 w/ W40, Y78, '85-'86 ('87?) 5.0 vin 9. Also looks like Pontiac B body used 7843135 as the standard box.
