It’s never gonna end, I swear.
I’ve been purposely leaving this to the bitter end, it’s extremely minimal result for effort put into it. But it’s gotta be done unfortunately. Want her to look her best for her (hopefully) big reveal.

I just thought that the other day, my neighbor came over to shoot the sh*t as i was pulling the trans out of my suburban, super cool guy and doesnt mind my projects but doesn't work on mechanical things himself. He asked what i was doing and when i told him he said "nah i wouldn't do that let someone else do it" was thinking to myself "well what else would i be doing after work??" I guess i wonder what "normal" people do all day that don't have old cars lol everyone one else in my neighborhood is fairly old and keep to themselves which i like very much.

We are definitely not "normal people".

As demonstrated by the man who paints his whole car to a very high standard, and then proceeds to repaint it in 12x12 sections because reasons.

I cant even wrap my head around painting my car once much less doing it as nicely as this car is turning out. Cant wait to see the results, but wow what dedication for even more painting and sanding.

The little sections is because I’m only doing small touch ups and clearcoat blends. The whole thing does NOT need to be redone!!

The passenger side had 3 areas that had wet sanding burn throughs and other blemishes/imperfections. When I was wet sanding, I did a little experimenting on the pinstripe on the header panel to see if I could remove the clear ridges over it (I couldn’t with the amount of clear I had to work with)...

...I had a spot under the quarter window that had solvent popped underneath a run I removed...

...had some dirt in the clear just below that...

...and a light burn through on the edge of the wheelwell:

At the back of the car, I had 2 more burn throughs on the quarter extension as well.

I’m pleased to report that tonight went well thankfully. No issues, no runs in the clear, and not a lot of dust or orange peel.
Perhaps the most successful feat was perfectly masking off the pinstripes on the header panel and pulling off a successful touch up:

The middle section went really good as well, all the spot-ins are invisible:

Same story with the quarter extension.

Doing blends isn’t exactly hard, but it can be a little stressful and tricky. A lot of forethought and planning has to go into what you plan to do long before you start sanding. I’m just glad tonight went well.

Once the clear has a couple days to cure, I’ll wet sand the newly shot areas back into the existing clearcoat, then polish to make it all seamless and invisible. That’s the beauty of a base/clear system.

For now, I’ll take the win on this first step, but now you can see why it’s minimal return on time and effort invested. Still, nothing looks worse than an otherwise nice paint job with burn throughs everywhere. It has to get rectified to truly look and be done right.
