Since I’m on here replying to queries anyways, I might as well do a quick update with today’s progress.

As you may have seen above, today I got the 4 repaired areas on the door shot in high build.

After that was done and drying, I finish prepped out the trunk lid to back window filler panel in 400, then played around with spacing and orientation of the pinstripes that’ll need to go on it before it goes back into place:

Once I had consulted pictures of original 1980 442’s and was satisfied mine would be laid out the same, I peeled off the test masking and shot the ends in white so that I can do the stripes for real next.

The whole time I was playing around with this stuff, Mike was diligently working away at stripping all the old checked and cracked lacquer from the junkyard bumper/license plate filler panel. It’s still gonna need some work, but it’s coming along. The top layer of plastic under the original paint was pretty badly degraded.

I’ve now got lots to do this week, tomorrow night I’ll start with block sanding out the door and re-priming again if necessary. Once I’ve got that licked, I’ll lay out the pinstripe lines again and get those shot, and eventually followed by the Sterling grey in the center.

Now you Olds purists that know the 78-80 442’s are going, “wtf are you doing? There’s no second color or pinstripes in that area on those cars!” But all I can say for now is that it’s my own deviation from a stock paint scheme, y’all will just have to sit tight and see what I’ve got planned.

Looks great. Hell spray it at home, cut and buff it, and enjoy. Ideal? No. But, things are proving life is waaaay to short to sweat all the details.

I understand the sentiment Mike, but that just isn’t gonna happen. I find it somewhat amusing the guys suggesting I spray it at home, no offence or disrespect intended to anyone but you guys obviously have never sprayed clear in an enclosed garage, nor had to clean up overspray aftermath.

Base and clear gets so finely atomized it hangs in the air like fog forever. And the clear especially is nice and sticky. It’s not a pleasant experience when it’s so thick in the air that the hairs on your arm stick together. I’ve sprayed stuff in the garage where you almost can’t see across the shop the fog has been so thick. And that was only a hood.

There’s no way in hell I'm gonna shoot 2 coats of epoxy sealer, 3-4 coats of white base, 2 coats of claret pinstripe, 3-4 coats of grey base, and 5-6 coats of high solids clear over the whole car all in my dusty assed little garage in suburbia.

It just ain’t gonna happen.

I’ll bide my time, do it right, do it safe and do it properly. If Covid should take me tomorrow, I’ll gladly meet my maker knowing that everything I attempted, I did so to the very best of my ability, cut no corners, and remained true to my standards.

And still enjoyed nearly every minute of it.

Stay the course .

This^^^.
Is the plan.
