looking into buying a fully redone 700r4 from one of the online retailer/rebiulders. seen some raves and rants for a few companies. i am leaning towards a Bowtie Overdrives unit. Who here has gotten a redone trans from the bigger online places and what are your pro's and con's? will be going behind a small block with about 400ish horses.

I would get a built 200 4R before a built 700 R4. I like the gearing bettering in the 200 4R and the 200 4R can be built for lots of power

I got one from Phoenix transmission in Texas, very impressed with it. It is the 700r4 4x4 version with a few extra options, 0 issues with it. I am using the TV made ez kit from bowtie with it, I have an Edelbrock pro-flo efi.

I mention wanting/looking for a 200-4R & people immediately preach the 700r's virtues. To me, they seem about equal as far as rebuilding is concerned (either one can be a POS/fantastic depending on the builder). I like the gearing splits better for the 200 as it's closer to the old school th350 (& th400's) which have worked well for the last 50yrs.

I've been considering a 4l80e just for the fact I've heard so many complaints about the TV cable operated transmissions constantly hunting for the right gear and/or early death because of improper/incorrect adjustment. While expensive, it will provide the gear split I like but has a computer controlling things like when to shift to OD and converter lock-up. Should be similar in cost compared to building one of the others to survive a long life behind a stout sbc/bbc.

I think the consensus is that the stock 700 r4 is stronger than the 200 4r but since you are buying something built I'd look at the 200.4r cause you like the gearing in it. The 700 r4 has a steep transition between 1st and 2nd

x2 on Phoenix Transmission in Weatherford TX. They built the 4l60e in a 02 C/E T/A I used to have. The factory trans puked its guts @ 36,500k easy miles.... The rebuilt Phoenix version survived another 100k w/o any issues. I did comparison shopping for pricing (dealership; local builder down my street; & Phoenix Trans). Dealership quoted $3200 (stock replacement) + converter if it needed one . Local shop quoted $2800-3200 for rebuild (depending on what failed) + converter. Phoenix quoted $2400 minimum average to $2800 depending on internal damage. The price included a Vette servo upgrade, shift kit, & my choice for converter stall. I figured, @ $2800 tops, that was better vs. just a stock rebuild/replacement.

My bill was $2480. I had a wrecker bring it to them on a Monday afternoon. They started on Tuesday. I picked it up on Wed @ lunch. The better servo, shift kit, & higher stall made huge impact in the driving experience! Their shop was spotless/well organized. If/when I find a used/core 4l80e, I will be bringing it to them for the rebuild.

Already have a nicely done 2004r in one of my wagons. not happy with gearing combined with the 4.10 in the rear. 1st is useless and it drags out 3rd to fourth way too long even at part throttle.

You're in Jersey??

There has to be a dozen places there between ETown and ATCO.

Build it local.

When you have a problem you will be happy you did.

More details are needed to understand this logic.

If you feel 1st is useless w/a 200-4r's 2.74 ratio & 4.10's (11.234 effective ratio), the 700r w/the same rear gear would only be worse w/its 3.06/1st gear (12.546 effective ratio).

The 3-to-4 shifting transition should be fairly similar as well between the two since both 3rd gears are 1:1/direct.

What is the vehicle combo?
