Hi Guys.

wiring the 81 malibu for drag only, car starts with key, but want to install a push button under the hood just because ill be adjusting my valves often.
this button is not for starting the car, ever, just simply turning the motor over in intervals of less than a second to get to TDC while i watch the timing mark.
( yes i do have a master power kill switch for any emergencies )
button in engine bay, installing where the wiper motor was.

any ideas? battery is all the way in the trunk. Can i run a wire from the 12V (+) starter post to this button, then back to the starter solid?

if yes,

-what gauge wire? and how many amps for the button? 35amps? 9.5:1 355sbc 350-375hp

thank you

I hardwired a push button start switch on the inside of each fender and have them wired to a remote starter solenoid and my battery is also in the trunk.
The toggle turns on my underhood lights.

Just wire it like the test button shows. Run 2 wires down to the starter and mount the button. I had mine on the firewall behind the distributor and used it to start the car More than anything else. I would reach in the car flip on the ignition and fuel pump and then go back to the engine compartment and crank it.

Quite honestly(after years of checking) if you used screw-in studs w/ poly locks and a stud girdle the valve lash will not change. I prefer baring the engine over by hand when lashing valves or bring up timing marks. Yes, your starter works for power. Turna's suggestion, fast and easy.

Thank you for all the info everyone.

Iv always had hydraulic cams,

Yes I'm using new 7/16 arp polylocks and new scorpion 7/16 roller rockers, but no girdle. Cam lift is 510 53
0, 246 250@50 106 lobe.

Maybe by hand would be ok as I'm hoping they wont move too much.

If I DID go with a switch, guy at jegs claims I'd need 50-60amp push button, and 2gauge wire going from starter to button back to starter.

I find 2 gauge a little heavy..

The starter solenoid itself is not a very heavy electrical load. For a truely waterproof installation find a good marine grade Cole-Hersee momentary button. It is rated for a starter, is waterproof, and has a rubber cover. Then just run a 10 or 12 gauge wire to your starter solenoid or even interrupt the starter wire you already have going inside the car. Run the other wire to a fused 12 volt source and mount the button somewhere convenient. Hopefully maybe if 565bbchevy chimes in he has a super clean installation in his engine compartment he can post the picture.

just bumped mine over yesterday to adjust the valves. i use 12 ga. wire and works just fine. have poly's and stud girdle and just adjusted them cause the weather was nice here. usually stay that way for years.

I prefer turning the engine by hand as well. That is why I said, more than anything I used mine to start the car when I was working on it. Mine was a 15:1 565 and I still turned it by the balancer bolt with the plugs in. Just really slow with smooth effort.
