alright guys, what I thought was a factory sunroof turns out isn't a factory sunroof, but what I need to know is: is it the same as a factory sunroof, just aftermarket installed?

here's what I got: 86 cutlass- salon with a 307' and glass moonroof:

^metal slider with headliner fabric

what started me scratching my head:

you see the different switch, and the name on it? we've seen that name before.....
then there's this:

it was installed by a company here in north carolina, but the "american sunroof company" if I'm reading some of the info I've gathered, is a sub-division of "American Specialty Cars", and we know what else they've made/doctored for the general
I'm just trying to gather a little info, and to also find out if a factory moonroof headliner board will fit this without major modifications...
thanks in advance,
Darin

that is actually kind of cool. ASC was run by a man named Heinz Precter. His GNX was at RIchards shop with his ASC moonroof installed into it. After he passed away Richard purchased it. The ASC is a smaller moonroof. What I would do is purchase the material and a new headliner out of ABS that Gbodyparts sells, modify it and glue the fabric on your self. Just use the old one as a template.

My Monte came with an ASC sunroof with a metal slider also and when I redid the headliner in a different color I found it was only material that was stretched and glued in place there was no board to apply the material on.
So I applied the same proceedure to install my new material and it came out really well but it was a pain to install.
I was told that the dealer sent my Monte to ASC because the customer wanted a power sunroof in his fully loaded car and it was not a factory option for Monte's,
whether or not not this is true didn't matter to me, since it works well, looks factory and I like having it.

I've noticed that mine eitherdidn't have a board, or the board had deteriorated badly, to the point of no longer there... thanks for the replies, as I have to address the siezed engine long before tackling the headliner issues... just trying to lay down a plan of attack! 🙂

toby, I had wondered about that gnx... thought maybe it had been such a nicley done clone, that maybe he'd picked it up for more of a curiosity factor than anything. neat history lesson for the day! some of my reading also taught me that mr prechter was the first person to bring the power sunroof to the american cars, starting of in the very early 60's (first one was for the '61 t'bird, that failed to become popular, then came back strong for the 67 cougars). pretty neat reading.

you are correct. And the GNX was widely involved with ASC's designing. That is the reason you will see ASC plates on the front of GNX sometimes as a tribute to the founder.
