i am getting ready to build the new motor for my regal, i put the entire motor, transmission and all accessories into my cutlass so i can have 2 g bodies. anyways since i am starting from scratch i am trying to budget my money as best as possible. the motor i am rebuilding is a 350 vortec out of my fathers 98 stingray boat, yes a boat motor, its basically the same as a vortec truck engine. the motor got water in it and my dad who does not know allot about engine insisted on replacing the entire thing leaving me with his old long block. i am pretty sure that there are no cracks and we believe the water came in through the exhaust. my queston is that since this was a low hour motor if i can re use the existing stock rings again, it is dissassembled right now and there is very little wear on the pistons and walls so i am not having it bored, just going to hone it and throw the stock pistons back in. i have torn motors apart in the past to have cranks reground and gaskets replaced and we just cleaned the pistons and rings up and threw them back in and the motor to this day is still on the road. is this a good idea or am i just being a cheap *ss on the deal?? i have a very large amount of stuff to purchase for the motor and after recently buying a house i am on a tight budget so i am just trying to stretch every penny..... thanks for any info!

a couple of questions; was there any rust in the cylinders and how bad? are the rings still on the piston, if removed, did you label them? is this going to be a performance engine?
personally, i say rings are cheap just do them. but if there was no rust on them or built up on the cylinder walls and they're still on the pistons then you should be fine.

little or no rust on walls or rings. i am planning to hone the walls of the cylinders also. rings are still on pistons also. i am using it for mild performance but mainly street use. if i do replace the rings i am not sure if i want cast, moly........ i dont know enough about rings to make the decision

that helps! i think moly is the way to go. i might just go ahead and order a set, it cant hurt since its already torn down. what do you think if my crank has some rust on it but no pitting?? it is not much but it is there.

moly is the best to go with but if your going to go with moly make sure your cylinders are perfectly round since the moly rings won't seat if they aren't and you'll be burning oil..

If this engine got hot, which boat motors usually do when they fail, it would be worth the extra scratch to keep from burning oil. You don't want to go through all that labor to end up with a mosquito fogger.

the funny part is the motor didnt get too hot, my dad was use the the motor running at 160 and the sea pump(water pump) was half clogged up so it got to 200 when he was running 3/4 throttle at 55-60 mph, he not thinking just shut the motor off at speed causing water to rush in through the exhaust(we think) causing it to get full of water. funny thing is after i got the new motor installed it was still running warm and then we descovered the sea pump was clogged up. we only boat on the river and there is sometimes debri in the water that over time gets clogged up. i tore the motor down and could not find anything wrong with it at all. my dad let me keep the motor which had vortec heads and is rated at 300hp from the factory and thats before i throw a holley steath ram and all sorts of performance items

i was only concerned about the rust in the cylinders because if the engine sat for awhile with water in it and the pistons rusted to the walls that would cause some issues. rust on the crank can be removed with some polishing compound if it's on the bearing surface. anywhere else you can just sandpaper it. make sure to run a pipe cleaner through all oil and coolant passages in the block and crank.
