I was looking for a part in my garage for a good friend yesterday when I came across a dozen of R12 freon cans that I purchased many moon's ago. The price on the can made me think how easy it was to go to an Auto parts store and buy them. I do remember when had purchased 3 cases total in the mid 80's with 12 cans left.

The prices on R12 have stabilized over the last 15 years. I have been picking up the small cans for $15 to $20 each off Craigslist and Facebook market place.
If you can find them for that price buy them. There's been talk about phasing out R134 in the next 5 years.

Still have most of my 30 pound tank of R12. Got it a long time ago for dirt in comparison to today's prices. I know it was less than 90 bucks at the auto parts store, no less, but can't recall the exact price I paid.

90 bucks was the range for a 30 pound tank. I remember Kmart and Walmart were selling 30 pound tanks back then. Make sure the valve is closed tight on those tanks, they tend to leak over time.

New cars are not R134a, they switched a couple of years ago already. Can't remember what the new freon is numbered.
Remember when they said 134 isn't quite as good as 12? Well the new one isn't quite as good as 134. :(

My bad R134a, so they made the change sooner than they expected. Need take a look at my wifes car 2019 to see what it takes. I havent seen any new freon at the Auto parts store just the R134a.

R1234yf is the new refrigerant manufacturers started using it around 2012, and 1234 is ridiculously expensive compared to 134, so much so that we charge people by the ounce instead of by the pound
