Surprise AZ.
I have had three computers die in the last five years. The last one I bought in April of 2016. It lasted 4 months, I sent it back to HP and they repaired it. It just died again, it won't turn on no power. Then today the $300 kitchen faucet my wife just had to have. Had the pull out hose split and flood the kitchen. Price Pfister does not service the hose. Before that the washer blew up and set fire to it's self. Last summer the 6 year old Side by side Fridge I paid $1800 for sh*t out a $600 compressor. Does anybody else have this sh*t happen to them or am I just cursed.:wtf:

Geez man, who did you piss off bad enough that karma is getting you back lol?

All jokes aside, stuff just isn't made the way it once was. We live in what seems to be a "disposable" society where companies seem to build things to last just long enough before they crap out and a warranty is invalid, in turn causing us to buy new stuff.

Granted I have 2 young girls, it seems dryers don't last long either. We are on dryer #3 in a little over 8 years. One was very gently used the wife and I bought from a friend, next one was new and died shortly after the warranty expired. To repair that one was what a new unit cost.

I feel this way about cell phones. Most contracts are 2 years when getting a new phone, and it just seems odd that nearing the 2 year mark our phones start acting stupid! It might be my conspiracy theory, but I tell the wife all the time it's the cell company screwing with the phones until we are fed up enough to go fetch the next upgrade!

I've found many things break and are disposable...

BUT

I've also found 2 things:

1) that shopping by features gives a hint at expected use: take cell phones, up until my current phone I had them break every 12-15 months. My current phone I picked one intended to have a replaceable battery, SD card for storage expansion, and repairable nonsealed unit. I've had it since winter 2014. It was intended for the long haul based on its features, and it has been great.

2) in the late 70s/early 80s a decent side by side fridge cost in the $900-1200 range. Comparatively, while we feel $1800 is a lot of money, as a portion of yearly salary it's chump change. They make $5000-7000 brands (not what you buy at home depot, sears, or lowes) that ARE meant to last and be more repairable. AND carry better warranties.

When we buy $9 toasters instead of price adjusted for inflation $80 toasters, well, there's a reason for the cheaper price...

My $12 toaster lasted 14 years. It quit and I replaced it with a $50 4-slice from Amazon. It arrived with a microprocessor that burned the toast on any setting above 1.5. It was not worth shipping back, and I used it about 2 years before it stopped functioning. I bought another $15 all-mechnical toaster at Costco. We'll see how that works out...

I bought a 10-year-old side-by-side stainless steel fridge from a friend for $100. It was making a howling noise but keeping the box cold, but he decide to buy new. Did a little research and it seems it may only need a condenser fan, $60 on Amazon. We'll see how well that works out...

And I will have a 37 year old Malibu immune to hackers (once it runs). We'll see how....

many many years ago It used to be if you paid top dollar for something you'd get quality, now marketing plays a bigger role than quality and we pay for it
