I have the rear axle out of my Caballero and it’s clearly not the original. I’m pretty sure it’s an 8.2 BOP the upper control arms are clear not original . They are rusty and the rest of the car is in much better shape. They have some weird coating on them that rusts . I’m wondering if anyone knows what the black coating is and is there an easy way to remove it ?

This coating is much harder to remove then the rush . I don’t see any reason to keep the coating on . But it would take a not of hand sanding to remove it all.

Wire cup on a grinder or sandblast if you have a cabinet.
Or just buy some new adjustable control arms.

I have tried wire cup and wheel doesn’t touch it. I was hoping to find a solvent only thing that I have found to work is a flapper wheel . there Is a lot that I can’t get with a wheel . What ever this coat is it is a lot harder to remove then the black coating on my frame.

Try a knotted wire wheel on your grinder. If it is as hard to get off as you say you will be covered in sharp wires when your done. safety up appropriately.

I use a grinder where I can and a drill for harder to reach spots. I have cleaned rust on many different things in my life but this coating is tough . It seems to be as hard as the metal. I’m not even sure I need to remove it to paint the control arms. I was just thinking it would be nice to start with clean metal.

You could try some Easy Off oven cleaner that is what I use to strip powder coating off aluminum valve covers before I polish them.

I have tried everything I have . I’ll give the oven cleaner a shot . I’m starting to think it’s some kind of acid etch .

I used a rust dissolver and knotted wheel to clean mine up for some fresh paint.

Thinking baked on enamel for the finish that you are trying to remove. Very hard and durable. Blast cabinet and a bag of Black Beauty abrasive.

Or a visit to your local indie speed shop and score a pair of Hotchkiss uppers. Your stock bushings look their age and the factory bushings never were about handling or performance. it is possible to keep the stock uppers and rebush them but those bushings to do not like to come out and require serious encouragement to get them to vacate the premises. If memory serves i posted pics on what it took to yard the bushings out of the upper ears on my rear end this past summer as well as the tools I used to stuff the new bushings in. Fun? NOT!
