Going out to pick this 8.5 up this weekend. Has 4.10 gears and south side bars... just something To hold me off until I can go Ford 9”. I’ll probably convert this over to disk brakes eventually.

Just build the 8.5 right and it will last a very long time. I have rebuilt the one in my 1979 Z-28 RS Camaro. With a 500 Hp plus 377 supercharged small block,And a Super T-10 4 speed. With no issues.

Went and picked the rear end up. Seems to be in good condition, newer bushings, longer studs. Power washed it and put a coat of paint on it to freshen it up.

What you parts do you suggest

You ought to give the 30+ year diff an inspection. Before taking anything apart measure backlash. Pull axles and inspect splines. If the splines on the axles are worn significantly, then you'll need side gears and axles. Pull the carrier and inspect the two carrier bearings and races - if there is any wear on either of those bearings or races, then it needs a bearing kit.

If everything looks good, then the best upgrade is a set of aftermarket axles. The stockers are not large and a set of Mosers are night and day compared to the stock parts.

You mentioned putting in a 9". That is completely unnecessary until you start making serious power with slicks.

IMO serious power starts at 4 digits.

That's a pretty clean car - I like it! Don't throw out the 7.5 - save it in case your new crap breaks. Swapping in a rear so it can be driven is a 4-5 hour job.

Left work early to day, I just haddddd to get this thing bolted in... now all I have to do is bleed the brakes (just installed manual) and get the driveshaft shortened. Hopefully this thing will be back on all fours by the weekend. At least want to cruise it till the snow falls.
