rearend swap

hey got a question.....i know this is a ignorant question..but i know nothing about rearends....i have a 78 elcamino with the stock 7.5 rearend with 2.41 or 2.40 somethings all i know for sure is they suck......i have a 7.5 outta a 86 firebird with 3.42s will these 3.42s work in my 7.5?

You will have to swap out the carrier and the gears. Being an 86' it should have 26 spline axles just like the el camino.

Actually, you don't need to swap the entire carrier. You just need to get a ring gear spacer for stock gears. Summit or speedway sells them.

That's true. I even have one, but would avoid it if possible. And by swapping carriers it will save ya 50 bucks.
