I have 2 lower door panels that are set up for manual locks, like my car, but the problem is they are blue and my interior is burgundy. I was thinking I could remove the carpet off the bottom, dye them with SEM and put new carpet pieces on the bottom. I tried scraping the carpet off with a putty knife but I'm going to have to use something a little better. Is there a chemical I can use to soften the glue that won't ruin the plastic? Also where can I get the new carpet pieces?

3m adhesive remover sold at walmart is wonderful and works well. I have used it a few times. Soak it down, a few beers, plastic razor blade.....peel carpet. Glue will be left over....soak again.....only one beer....more scraping. It's nasty sh*t. The 3m stuff works very very well. Its in the auto section.

Joe,
Regarding the lower door panel carpet inserts, I found these on Dixie Monte Carlo's website. They come in various colors.

When I did mine, I had extra yardage that I cut mine out from. Originally, I removed the carpet pieces from my old door panels to be used as patterns. That was more trouble than it was worth, but did help some.
Also make sure there's no staples holding the carpet pieces. Mine had staples and was glued to beat the band. :?

I like Toby's solution using the 3M adhesive remover.

Use a strong dish soap in about 100 degrees water to soak the two pieces and a hair dryer or heat gun and it will pull right off. 'Scraping' on any old surface = scratches or it can crack. Dawn dish soap is not just dish soap it is a chemical separator as soon as you apply heat you have action

It sounds like you've used this method before. It actually dissolves and softens the glue? If so, I like it! I'm game for any non-toxic solution(no pun intended).

I soaked the carpet on my panels with generic lacquer thinner. It ate up the glue and didn't damage the plastic at all.
