I was replacing my valve cover gaskets and tried to remove my plug wire...ended up ripping the metal clip off and was stuck on the plug. What is the correct technique to repairing this? Seen youtube videos with 2 different ways as far as the wire being exposed vs leaving it insulated and then folding back into clip. And after learning the correct technique, would it affect anything to trim all plug wires so everything looks tight to get rid of slack in the wires? Plug wires are tay84004

That will work as long as the core is tight against the clip. Cut the insulation leaving some of the core exposed and find a spot to secure it to the clip- some have a hole to thread it into. Lots of wire sets come un-assembled so you can make up a custom set that fits each cylinder perfectly. Just make sure there is no gap at all at the clip. To be sure you could test with an ohm meter to see the resistance is low.

So if I do it this way, it will be fine? No gap as in make sure it's crimped good and tight?

I use a tool that is placed in a vise. You position the two halves around the metal clip once you strip back the outer sheathing and place the inner core behind the clip. It's always worked well for me.
I usually opt for the wire sets that you have to cut to size and crimp your own ends on.

I actually have a pair of wire strippers with the built in ignition wire crimpers. I had to do it when my MSD Superconductor wire cracked from heat. I carefully pried the connector with a small screwdriver to open and reuse it. Then carefully strip to not ruin the conductor and recrimp.

I fold over the conductor as shown and crimp the connector on. When I cut the insulator I twist it off in a tightening direction to not unwind the conductor core. I also use a set of pliers made for crimping the ends on that I have had for about 100 years. Get yourself an MSD 3503 tool for use in a vise. It crimps the end and acts as a guide to strip the wires with a razor blade.

For the price of the tool you can get a brand new set of USA made Taylor wires!!!

Since I always buy universal plug wire sets so I can cut them to length and make my own I bought a ratcheting MSD pro crimp tool years ago, plus I can replace the jaws for other style connections. Works perfect
