so cal
i put my shifter in reverse and my reverse lights dont come on they only come one if i pull the shifter up right before park and hold the shifter there if i let go they turn off i know this is a common problem with gm cars from this era noticed it on my buddies 85 astro i think the problem might be somewhere in the steering columm but i got no clue

how do you adjust this so the reverse lights come on when the car is in reverse, im having the same problem and haven't looked into it much yet

i guess our issues are different because mine work fine, i just swapped my engin eand transmission so where my trans ends up in reverse isn't in the exact same slot as it used to be therefore the reverse lights arent on when the car is actually in reverse

wow what trans did you put in?

On the linkage at the transmission make sure you have the plastic insert that fits in the shifter bracket on the transmission. If insert is missing or broken the linkage is sloppy and it won't move the lever on the steering column properly and the column won't be lined up with the reverse lite switch

after running my 700r4 i had the same prob since i had to modify the linkage but i put the factory bushings in and it worked just fine

one way to find out if it is a linkage problem with the reverse lites is to put the car in reverse and grab the column near the dash and see if you can turn it to turn the reverse lites on....if you can it's a linkage issue
