Anyone have any good tips on restoring rusted out panels ? I’m building an 80 Mali & driver rear lower quarter panel is rusted out I already cut it out I’m cutting the donor car up tomorrow & hopefully welding it back up. Any advise would be helpful I’m basically running off of how to videos on YouTube thanks !! (I’ll post pics tomorrow)

Since this is a new venture for you....

I would put it in at the factory seam front, rear, and bottom. Flange the top and panel bond it. Plenty strong, avoids welding warpage and ensures that the area between the two panels is completely sealed to prevent further corrosion. Welding long seams can be very difficult to avoid warping, especially for beginners. Even with the use of weld-through primer, there are going to be localized rust spots in the lap joint. When correctly prepped and instructions are followed, panel bonding will be as strong as welding it, without the inherent potential problems of welding it.

I would suggst flanging the repair and plug welding it. Take a look at posts in this thread starting at about 33. We did three flanged patches on the quarter panel on my dad's 62 Ford Galaxie....

I see what you meant by flanging now I don’t have a tool for that but I’m sure I can figure it out I wanted to do one seam without drilling those holes but I see the welding part is pretty hard since you can warp the panel..

This is the donor car I measured out where I will be cutting it. I don’t have a flange tool so I’m kind of on pause right now..

Cut 4” all the way & went up a bit on the right side. Got it all covered up since it’s raining today waiting for it to clear up & get out there.
