a little messy but you can do it with the engine running.just slowly tighten till engine starts to miss or bog down and back it off till it smooths out.

here's how I do mine with a roller, it helps if you have the balancer with the markings

Valve Lash Adjustment
1. Position engine at top dead center (TDC) on #1 cylinder in firing position.
Adjust intake valves on #2 and #7 cylinders.
Adjust exhaust valves on #4 and # 8 cylinders.

2. Rotate crankshaft 1/2 revolution clockwise.
Adjust intake valves on #1 and #8 cylinders.
Adjust exhaust valves on #3 and #6 cylinders.

3. Rotate crankshaft 1/2 revolution clockwise to #6 cylinder in firing position.
Adjust intake valves on #3 and # 4 cylinders
Adjust exhaust valves on #5 and #7 cylinders.

4. Rotate crankshaft 1/2 revolution clockwise.
Adjust intake valves on #5 and #6 cylinders
Adjust exhaust valves on #1 and #2 cylinders

Reinstall valve covers and connect power to the distributor. Start engine to check for loose valve lash

it's what GM performance has in their instructions for a roller. With a roller the peaks are rounded and if done by the 2 step method you'll end up with some loose rockers. You also can't use the method of running the engine cause you can damage the rollers when they are loosened off to do the adjustment.
