Thinking of doing shaved door handles on the GN for something different but a bit worried about reliability or something happing to the remote. Whats the overall word on shaved handles and what kind of back up saftey measures did you take in case of electric failure?

the real safety issue is if you get trapped in the car and they have no way of opening the door.

I shaved mine. I like the clean lines down the side and trunk(shaved all the locks also). It is not a daily driver so I'm not as worried about issues. I will say that do not go cheap on the actuators, since it is the only way door will open. Can't stress that enough... Also when when welding in the patch panels take your time, the doors warp easy if too much heat.

I went with Bear Claw latches with the integrated pop solenoid as part of the latch assembly. As for a back up the easiest solution is just a cable release run to an inconspicuous place.

This is not a DD by any means just a weekend touring/show car i'm not worried about safety they can just but the window if i'm trapped inside! What sort of manual cable is used to pop the door? and being my trunk lock is being shaved i would need a fail safe for that also if the stock actuator fails!

I was looking on Autoloc's site and found some more safety cables so that looks easy enough! Were the Bearclaw latches universal or made for the Gbody's that would be a easier route to have it all intergrated together?

So there are companies out there that make G body latches with intergrated solenoids?

I used this kit on my '87:

Seems to work fine.

For an emergency entry cable I found one on Ebay that takes a key to unlock so that you can pull the cable.

If your really concerned about getting in the vehicle in case the battery goes dead you could always install a remote set of jumper terminals that you could access without having to pop the hood.

As far as safety I don't really see much difference between this or if you have your door locked. If it's a dire emergency to get in the vehicle then a hammer to the window glass would be the best option.

Something to keep in mind too is if you shave the trunk lock you'll need to rig up a cable to that just in case the electric solenoid gives out. I TIG welded a small metal rod to the stock trunk latch mechanism that I could then attach a cable to and run it up through the trunk and into the interior of the car.

That kit looks simple enough what lb pulls are with it and do they have any issues opening the latch? Did you have to use poppers i figure with new weatherstrip it should push open fairly easy? i have a nice viper alarm and i'm trying to see if i can use that for the doors insead of the cheaper remotes.
