I have a factory installed Hurst shifter that came out of a '78 Cutlass, that I want to use in my '80 Malibu. I'm trying to figure out how to remove the lever from the shifter body. It looks like the lever locks into the shifter body, similiar to the O.E. ITM shifter. Is there a special tool required to release the lever from the shifter body? Do you need some kind of feeler gauge type tool to slide in on both sides to release the lever? Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

If you plan on jamming gears, remove the spring clip and drill it for 2- 3/8" Grade 8 through bolts. I have yanked the handle out, and it's not fun.

That chrome lever is not coming out if the tabs are engaged in the hole in the bottom of the lever. You can almost lift the car with the lever when they are engaged!

I have several of those shifters. I used two .008" feeler gauges down either side of the lever and it was able to come out.
I'm assuming that the long wide feeler gauges probably work better?
