Shifter Linkage compatible between all G bodies?

Hi I own a collumn shift 1980 monte and I need new shifter linkage parts. Will the linkage from a 1984 SS monte work? If not, why not? Thanks for the expertise!

The linkages will interchange, might have a difference in the thickness of the rod used but that wont affect how it works.
