i purchased a so called Monte Carlo ss
Steering gearbox from rock auto

I tried to install it today

I have also installed a new pitman arm. Something I read I would need. I'll have to get the part number to tell u guys what it's for

My problem is I can't turn the wheel. With the car on the ground it won't turn left or right
I have serviced the pump.

The car in the air...wheels turn with ease

I also obviously set the pitman arm up incorrectly as I can't turn left but can right. So I must not have the pitman arm centered correctly

So I am fighting two issues. One I think I can fix
The other I don't know

Could you have switched the hoses from their right locations? Pressure hose is inboard (towards motor) and return is outboard.

I'll check that
I looked at that specific routing. I am pretty sure it's correct but I'll check it tomorrow

Do you have all the air out? With the car wheels off the ground and the motor running, try cycling the wheel back and forth a few times to 'burp' it. Check fluid level once you are done. Don't add too much fluid or it may foam on you.

If it turns in the air and not on the ground when running, then you have air as ssn696 mentioned. His recommendation is what you need to do to get the air out (as long as the lines aren't reversed.)

Well
Spent today working on my el camino
I started the day by rechecking the hoses. They where installed correctly

I then moved to the gearbox. Tried purging the air from it by cycling the steering while the car was in the air

No worky. I simply can't get the air out of it.

I removed and reinstalled the original steering gear box at that point. Purged the air serviced reservoir and it was good to go

I must have bought a bad gear box.

Test drive it tonight and runs good.

Went through the same issue with 3 or 4 boxes.

The dope fiends they have rebuilding them have no idea what they are doing.
