Bought a 1985 Cutlass Salon, 350 Chevy engine, 650 cfm Holley Carb. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

Starts fine, idles fine, drives fine until you come off the gas and begin to slow down, it then wants to stall, place it in neutral, it slowly returns to idle, or give it a shot of gas and it returns to idle.

Car has not had a good run in over a year, was leaning towards it being a carb issue, ran carb cleaner through and it still does the same thing, can even just place it in gear and give it gas, it then looks to stall.

Any ideas to put me in the right dirrection. And what is the correct way to tune a holley carb as I seen some sights and the info is different.

Thanks

Does it have the 2004R transmission? If so I've heard the TCC solenoid can stick not letting the TCC unlock which causes the car to stall..... I think mine has that problem...... The fix is a new TCC solenoid.....

this was happening with my engine when i first put it in, it ended up being an egr gasket and/or vacumn leaks. i say and/or because i fixed them both at the same time then it worked like a charm.

That's what I kept thinking my problem was.... But I've inspected/fixed/replaced everything dealing with vacuum and my car still does it...... I know it's needing the trans rebuilt anyway so I'm hoping that's where my problem is.....

i've honestly never heard anybody say "i hope its the transmission"

Ok I have the same problem, more precisely I had the same problem and it came out like this: the alternator/fan belt was old and going off to one side but I didn't care and thought it was fine, it was because the tensioner/pulleys are mounted crooked/warped from weathering and the radiator/fan shroud was a cheapie (gray plastic) so the radiator was therefore not mounted completely. With the hood shut I thought the mounting would be good enough, but I suppose the ammount of tension going thru the front of the car eventually wore the old screws holding the fan to its plate. The fan/alternator belt came loose and dismounted the fan, because it too was crooked, and then the car continued to drive even though the fan violently dislodged going 30mph and attacked the radiator - now my radiator is sporting the Mike Meyer's scar and leaking coolant - its shot. Im no mechanic so that may not be your problem, but if it is the symptomology was like this - before that all came loose the car was as you described and running on super low voltage so it sounded way off at startup. I would flick the lights off / on before startup just to see whats up sometimes they were super strong beams other times really weak, and sometimes the car radio was wanting to shut off because i wasnt getting sufficient return to the alternator w the slipping belt obviously. Besides that, even if everything is mounted perfectly under your hood maybe the alternator is just about finished and needs replaced soon =/ Im sure you have a voltmeter unlike me, so go for 2-3 drives throughout the day using electronics and take readings to see if your alternator is giving consistent return or variable returns would be my suggestion

Yeah it has the 200R4, was rebuilt 60,000 km ago.

Now what if the electric choke was staying open? Would this not cause it to want to stall also if I was slowing down? I noticed yesturday I let it warm up for 20 mins, and reved it a few times and the choke plate stayed fully open. It should have came down and stayed open slightly correct?

I have sprayed all my vaccum lines with carb cleaner, never wanted to stall. The only time it looks to stall is in gear. I can rev it up in drive/reverse with my foot on the brake and it will want to stall, so I place it in neutral and give it a shot of gas and it comes back.
