Heat soak will affect the module in the HEI distributor. That is why they include some special grease to apply to the underside of the module. If it was not applied- maybe no spark. Is there an EFE valve in the exhaust manifold? If stuck shut, all exhaust is forced under the carburetor which gets real hot. Heat soak can boil the fuel bowl dry. Lastly- after how long sitting will it start and run?
Yes, this is a possibility. Something to check anyway. The modules I used to buy came with a small tube of diaelectric grease in the box but I doubt that happens any more. If you need some, any of the local auto parts stores should have some. You only need a film on the module if needed, so a small tube of it is all you would need to buy if necessary. Around a couple of bucks. It helps to transfer heat from the module to the baseplate to keep the module cool. It can't be any old grease, however.

And last but not least- vapor lock. The fuel line passes very close to hot engine components and when it sits hot the fuel can boil. That gas bubble will not let liquid fuel pass until it cools and condenses. This is especially so on air conditioned and modified cars (headers) so they added a third fitting on the fuel pump. That third line is the fuel bypass that sends excess fuel back to the gas tank. That way the pump sends fresh cool fuel up to the carb. By using a puel pump that has only two fittings you are defeating the vapor lock cure. Another tip- plugging that third line will cause a slow insidous flooding condition at the carb. The excess fuel has to go somewhere so it goes to the carb. At idle it overcomes the float and makes the engine idle rough and the plugs will foul.
