I'm working on a 1981 El Camino with a Saginaw 605 steering gear. It leaks from the top, which I understand is not uncommon with this part. I ordered a replacement from an online supplier and they sent me the box with the four bolt retainer (as opposed to the snap-ring type) I think maybe it's a Saginaw 800. They told me that the parts would interchange, but I'm reluctant to go to the trouble of disassembling my steering to find out that it doesn't work. Any experience or advice in this regard would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

You need the pitman arm for the 4 bolt top box fr it to work

You should be good to go then.

The only other thing may be the hose fittings depending on the year of the "new" box is.

What brand did you buy ? You can get a Monte SS box from Lares. I think the part number is 1282. I bought mine through Advance Auto but rockauto also sold them.

Pardon my jacking this thread, but I got a box out of a 98(?) Jeep and I was saving it for another project, but the steering box in my 84 Hurst/Olds is leaking. Does anyone know if the fittings are the same size and type?
