Why does my steering box look different than others?
IMG_2759_LI.jpg

As I am pulling the motor, now would be a good time to upgrade to the quicker ratio box.

Any current part numbers/vendors would be greatly appreciated.

You've got the old school slow ratio box. Many options out there.

Your have a 605 'box. QR version is the 800 'box. Beware of the fitting change in 1981. Later units use the O-ring. Adapters available, but hard to find.

Don't put a clean new unit in front of a crappy old steering pump full of trash. If you replace the pump and pressure hose, all is new, and you can solve the fitting problem. Use the photos to match the bolt pattern to the one in your car now. don't try to press your old reservoir on the new pump - too much trouble.

All the replies are correct. You have the crappy box. The newer style is a bolt in. I bought 2 close ratio boxes that were done by Lares. Its an American rebuilding company. They have a website. Look on their site and find the box for an SS Monte Carlo. Quick ratio. Rockauto has them but I bought both of mine at the local Advance auto. The price was the same if I remember correctly and no shipping charges for returning the core.

I am seeing there is a manual steering box option, out of an S-10. Thoughts on this?

I'm building a 4 door, I don't mind being different ;)

Just want to know what parts will work. I kinda like the idea of manual steering, feel the road a little more.

Isn't the pitman arm different between the 600 and 800 series boxes? Or was that for pre-84? I don't recall.

^^^^^ yes, the spline is larger on the 800 series box where the pitman attaches
