I’m looking for the Jesus clip for the lock plate, spring for top bearing tension and the collar the spring rides on (see photo).

Ive hunted for these online at parts stores, but no luck. Are these same in most columns of the 80’s era?

There is a GM part number for it. It's GM # 5694191. Still available from GM. $10.14 list price. Ring, Lock Plate Retainer.

Of course, that'd be last resort. I'm sure if you take your lock plate compressor with you, you can find a bunch of them at the treasure yard.

Bearings and seats/retainers and junk? You'd have to buy bearing and spring kits. Generally not serviced separately.

7844650 tilt spring kit has the bearing races/seats.

The upper bearing not serviced separately, but would come in the rack kit. P/N 7844651.

This place seems to have a bunch of good info about steery columns, but buying junk from them can be PRICEY!!! But he sells a spring and retainer/seat as a little kit by itself. For almost $60!!!

Thanks. Seeing the range of years tells me I should be able find one at the junkyard.

I won’t be spending that much unless it’s a last resort.

I’ve torn the column down to the pivot and the 4 bolts weren’t loose. Appears there is a nonfunctional snap ring or retainer lower in the column which is allowing the shaft about 3/4” in and out movement in the column.

Digging deeper.

I found a great online reference on working on those columns. I have a hard copy at the office (only place with a printer that could print it). I'll post a link tomorrow. I'm going to send myself a reminder now....
