I’m putting my column back together after fixing and painting where the shifter used to be and installed a new turn signal switch and cam. Afer all thats in I installed the new Grant adapter kit and steering wheel. This is a 79 Elco with a tilt column. The entire upper part of the column from the tilt joint up is loose and wobbly. I know I tightened everything down real good. Has something in the tilt joint gone bad ? Again, one step forward, three steps back.

Common problem with these GM tilt steering columns. Need to get really deep into the column to get at the four screws to tighten it properly. Do an internet search on g-body tilt column repair. When I did my '84, I used the video of the '87 442 and pictures from elcaminocentral to help me step through it.

Thanx, thats what I was afraid of. I’ve already hit my limited experience with steering columns. Going into uncharted territory. Atleast I’m taking a break today and going up to the northern hills of western Pa . Been working on it every day for the last 7 weeks.

Watch and follow this vid by Hutch. Excellent video on how to fix your very problem. You can win.

And at the 44:15 mark, he adds the porno music just for me. :)

I’ll be back on it tomorrow. I was a bit concerned when I put the wheel on and the shaft was real sloppy.

Along with seeing if I can fix the problem with literally very limited column experience. I’ve been looking online to just replace the entire column. Not knowing what size shaft, spline count even length makes searching quite confusing. Which if any has anyone replaced theyres with? It’s my back up plan if I can’t get mine fixed. Knowing my luck, I’ll probably end up going that route.

Hopefully you can fix it Doug. I've never been that deep into a column myself so no advice here.

I believe 78 was the only year for splines on the lower column...79 and up had the double D.

If you do decide to replace it I have access to several Gbody columns, all would be column shift however.

Thanx, if I end up going that route, I’ll need a floor shift column
