I’m the middle of doing a frame off rest and when I went to remove the steering pump I realize the top has a hole on it (looks like a bolt goes there) and you can hear it slush inside when you turn the knuckle. Can anyone tell me if I’m missing a cap there? Car came like that. Also frame is off and not too bad , still bad enough that I will be sending to sandblast and Powdercoat. But the under carriage is in real good shape imo. Is there anything that will stick to the Chevy wax coating? I’d hate to see a new frame and see the underside look old, but I feel like chevys coating still has a lot of life left. Maybe pressure wash and apply something? Tia

The steering pump. May change it out since it looks ugly. Anyone know a part number for this? Tia

Yeah, I probably do. If I knew what vehicle application it goes to. Chevy 800 series covers a lot of ground.

GM part number for your Monte SS would be 7843135, code YA. Same as an 83-87 H/O and 442, 1986 Pontiac GP with FE2 suspension. Also 86-87 Buick G-body VIN 7 with touring/sport suspension. To name a few. NOT to be confused with the 7833135 box that looks the same on the outside, but isn't on the inside.

You have to make sure it's 2.5-ish turns lock to lock. May be a tiny bit more than 2.5 turns, but it needs to be thereabouts. The YA box is a fast ratio box. It should bolt right up.

You always need to be aware that the gear you actually get only has to fit and hook up and they call it good. It's your job to make sure of checking the turns lock to lock.

I have no real comment on your underbody. Doesn't seem like much more than surface rust. Do what you want to do. But I'd do it differently. Once I got the frame out, there's no good reason NOT to clean it off on the underside, repaint it and try to replicate the spray sealer or whatever gunk that is that comes from the factory.

A bit of time spent now will net you a non-embarrassing view when you get it all done. I mean, what's the point of taking off the body if you're not going to clean it up under there? JMO. To me, it's like taking a shower, then taking a crap and not wiping your a**. That's just nasty.
