As I've been sorting through things in the garage I found out something about my recolored/dyed steering wheel, it was sticky. Last year when I had it out everything was OK. Today I grab it off the shelf, it's sticky. It was dyed less than ten years ago. Was sticky from sitting in a closed up Cavalier in the junk yard. I cleaned it up good, left it in the shed at the old house until we moved to this house where is went into the garage. Was never sticky during all that time. I figured it could be something useful for others who recolor a cleaned up "sticky" wheel. Best thing is there was barely any color transfer while cleaning it, just like most factory dyed parts.

The sticky is the actual material breaking down.

You can clean it off but it will come back.

I remember someone soaking it in something to stop the wheel from breaking down but I have no idea what it was anymore

I figured in part the stickyness was something from the material used being induced by our dirty hands being all over it.

My 1979 Hurst had that same stickiness when I looked at buying it. Seems the heat makes some material ooze out of the
steering wheel. It was almost like honey on mine but it was hard to find a cleaning agent to remove it. I tried SImple Green
and it took a bit of scrubbing but I'd say MOST of it is off. Just my experience.............

I'll have to dig for that posting. Wasn't really expecting it to be sticky after all these years of not being. But it atleast looks good for the PPG dark maple dye to still be holding up.
