I finally got back out to work on the 81 again.
I hooked up a battery to the car and right away the door buzzer worked so I knew I had power. It was alive !! LOL
So far Ive got all the exterior lights working. I cut the reverse plug off and ran new wires to where the shifters getting mounted. With the plug jumped the reverse lights worked so I know thats good to go.
All the dash lights look like theyre on although the bulbs at the cluster arent that bright. I can live with that. The gauges are all lit up so I know thats good. Turn the key to on and all the gauges move so thats good.
Dome light works and so do the lights under the dash.

Now the strange thing. As soon as the key is in the on position the left directional arrow in the dash lights up. Both arrows work right when I try each side but for some reason the left arrow doesnt go off. I have no idea why. Anyone got any ideas ?

The other thing Im still not sure about are the wires for the neutral safety. Theyre hanging there under the dash. Car cranks over with nothing in the plug. I made a little jumper with a short piece of wire and two male spade connectors. Jumped both sides of the plug and the car still cranks over. It that the way its supposed to be ? To be honest I dont even know how the NSS is supposed to work. In my previous threads I said the column was converted to a floor shift column from a column shift long ago. The ECM is long gone. Should I just stuff the plug back up under the dash and leave the second micro switch on the shifter not hooked up to anything ?

If thats the case all I have left to run is the wire for the indicator light on the shifter. And figure out the arrow issue. I know you guys will have the answers ! LOL

Where would I look for a bad ground ? And if its a ground issue why do the directionals still work ? I really hate electrical problems. SMH

if you jumped those two wires off the switch together that's what's completing the circuit-allowing the car to start.
if those are in fact the nss wires it shouldn't start with them not touching each other.

This what I posted in my first thread about the shifter. Orange wire and a black with white tracer. From what everyone has said Im pretty sure this is for the NSS. When I tried to crank the motor over with it hanging there it cranked. Jumped the two wires and it still cranked. Im thinking this isnt the way its supposed to be.
