Restorers have driven the price of Muncie transmissions, particularly the M22, out of sight. Unless you score a smoking deal, a TKO might be a better choice.
 
The MY6 (GM's application of the New Process A833) should be sturdy enough. It's a 4 speed but 4th is overdrive.

TKO600 is the way to go. 600ft lb input torque, classic 4 speed strength with overdrive. Plus theyre ballpark $1300-$1500.

You could get an after market richmond super t10 from summit for like $1000. Its the equivalent of the m22 but by richmond.
