I swapped from a 200-r4 to a 700-r4 in my 86 Grand Prix 2+2 and cannot a shifter cable to work. The problem is the 200 r4 shifter is too short and when I hook it up to the 700 r4 it is in too much of a bind because the 700 r4 appears to be a little bit longer than the 200 r4. The cable is in too much of a bind and it breaks. I know I read some information on it somewhere but cannot seem to find it, so I figured I would make a post. Any help or direct me to another post maybe even if I can use an aftermarket cable, whatever is the easiest to solve to solve this problem as it is driving me crazy! i bought two chinisium junk cables from O'Riellys and no luck. :blam:

I swapped a 4.8/4l60e (same solution should apply for a 700r4) into my 86 442 and retained the factory floor shifter. Here is how I did it:

I used a B&M shift lever:

......an fbody 700r4 shift cable:

.....and an fbody 700r4 trans bracket:

You have to modify where the cable snaps into the gbody shifter (it will be a few inches forward of where the 200r4 cable attaches). I don't have pictures of my setup.....but it's the same idea as 84cutspreme's pictures above....except I used a bolt and a slotted hole to allow some adjustment.

I do not believe the gear selector shaft is at a different location should be the same on both. I can measure tonight, the overall trans length is different. You may be running into an issue with the trans cable bracket position if using the bracket from the 2004r.

I measured both the gear selector input shaft locations and the cable bracket mounting points on both the 2004r and the 700r4, both trans have the gear selector shaft in the same location from the bell and the pan bolts that mount the cable bracket are the same distance from the gear selector shaft. So there is no difference I can see between the two.
