Hello everyone, I found a t56 transmission out of a 1998 (if I remember right) Pontiac Trans Am. It had an LT1 in front of it. 80000 miles were on the clock and have the Bellhousing with it. I have looked up if there were any differences and really the only thing I am seeing is input and output shafte spline counts. My question is, are there any different gear ratios inside these or is a T56 a T56? Also other than backup lights, is there any electrical to wire into it?

There should be the "2-3" lock out solenoid that forces the shifter to skip those two gears for economy based how the car was being driven.

'94-'97 lt1 Camaro t56's are interchangeable. '93 had different gears. '98-'02 ls1 camaro t56's interchange. '94-'02 t56's all had the same gear ratios. big difference started with ls1 t56's were different bell housing, input shaft length and what is called the trans mid plate that allowed a hydraulic throwout bearing to be used.

This must be a 97 t56. It did have the lt1 from the factory in front of it. I saw earlier today that this version was only good for around 400 hp. Anyone confirm this? This should bolt right up to a first gen small block Chevy with no problem.

i don't recall the hp numbers but its somewhere around 400. I've been running one behind an olds 455 for 7 years as a daily driver. no problems to speak of.

So 400 hp rating is close for this version it seems. My buddy is building a pro touring camaro and his engine will have around 800 hp. I don’t think this will be suffice for the build. I can pick it up for a grand with Bellhousing and all. I guess a call to tremec is in his future. I also thought about replacing the Monte Carlos t5 with this. Not sure if this upgrade would be better or worth the effort. My 406 , if I decide to put it in the Monte, has more than 400 hp

depends on how your drive the car. if your t5 is surviving, then the t56 will do just fine. just don't dump the clutch with sticky tires.

The t5 actually does a great job for what I do. For now. If I put the 406 in, the t5 probably isn’t going to be the best transmission behind it. But that may never happen. I just always thought all t56’s were the same. I thought you could stick stupid hp in front of any of them and they were hard to kill.

Yeah they are the same for 94-02 minus the input shaft front plate and bell.

There is a reverse lockout solenoid which should be wired up or removed.

You do not want to remove the Reverse Lockout Solenoid, remove the CAGS (Skip Shift) Solenoid on the drivers side under the inspection cover.

I build T56's, could write a book on them right here.

LT1 & LS1 Fbody ones are the most common ones used, 04-06 GTO is the next, little different ratios in it.
