Just noticed today the reverse is out. Backed outhe of my driveway and tried to back up the hill under throttle and all it did was rev although if put in reverse in a parking spot on the level it will back out on its own power, just letting the torque take it. Is it gone, or could there be ano there issue I'm not thinking of? I know these are pretty weak as is, I'm sure with the 3.8l v6 there are alright but the 250 ft lbs of torque these 5.0l put out its a little much for the 200. I will end up looking for either a th400 or a 700R here soon. Will I have any problems with a 700/what year should I look for. Thanks

Well, I totally disagree with your assessment of the th2004. Most guys have chevys so they know what chevy guys have to say about things, and not much else. I'm not a transmission guy, but when you go to the track and see the many turbo regals with 231's running in the 10s, you can bet most them are running th200s. Here's more:

700 or 200?

"Honestly its not even a fair fight. The 2004R will handle power that far exceeds that of any 700R4 or 4L60 that can be built at any price. 2004R has a better gear ratio spread, better overdrive ratio, will fit many more applications, lighter, stronger ... I can go on and on. The 700R4 is best left to applications where its the only option such as 4WD or All WD, tow vehicles, Lower HP applications or for folks that are more concerned with budget versus strength and reliability".

Good info, thanks. Never thought these were that tough. No wonder it's mated to the 307's with the torque output

If it's the 3 speed TH200, it's junk. If it's the 4 speed (Overdrive) TH200-4R, it has potential and I would agree, use it instead of a 700R4.

As others have said, if it's a th200 THREE speed, get it as far away from human civilization as possible. If it's a FOUR speed 200r4, get it rebuilt, or look for one out of a wrecked/parted out GN, 442, or Monte SS. They had the better valve bodies and torque converters. The GN tc stalled at 22-2400 rpm. A TH350 drops right in place of the three speed TH200.

So yes, it is theb3 speed....I mean with 76k miles, all of the forward gears are strong and shift hard and smooth....but I will definitely be looking for a replacement. Now, the 350, is that a 3 speed or four, and is that and the 200r4 a direct bolt in, or are there modifications/anything else I need tone take out of the divorce car to go with it?

Th350 is a 3 speed. P R N D 2 1.
It literally drops right in place of the th200. 200 out, 350 in. There are a couple different types though. First off, the newer type used throughout the 80s was the TH350c which used a lockup torque converter. There are also a few different tailshaft lengths. You want the short shaft, 6" tailshaft. Those are found in mid size and smaller (70s camaros, firebirds, shortbed trucks, vans, etc) and will drop right in. Same mounts, linkage, driveshafts, everything. The th200r4 is a 3 speed with overdrive, so it's actually a 4 speed. P R N (D) D 2 1
Its physically longer than a th350 and th200 and you may have to get a shorter driveshaft. Your car is 84+ so it already has the extra holes to slide the crossmember back. If you have a column shift the indicators wont line up. You can convert to a floor shift, but it's more trouble than it's worth imo if its iust gonna be mostly stock under the hood.
