so today I finally picked up a TH350 out of a 79 Chevy pickup but I measured and it has a 9” tail shaft and I’ve read that only a 6” tail shaft will bolt straight in. What modifications would I need to make? Shorter driveshaft?

I know the TH350 with the 9” shaft is 5/8” longer than a 700-R4 so would I need the driveshaft from a 700R4 G Body?

No gbodies ever came with a 700r4. You'd be better off getting a TH350 with a 6" tailshaft, that's really your only option. Chevy Th350s are literally a dime a dozen. Get one from 1979 and older, so it's not a lockup transmission so you won't have to mess with any wiring. Check the pan and smell the fluid before hand. IF the pan has shavings/paste in it, move on. If the fluid is darker than blood or sparkly or smells burnt (like hair, or burnt toast), move on, etc.

What about having a shop shorten the driveshaft?
