Bought a th200 for my car only to realize when I got home that the bell housing was different from the original transmission from my car. Why are the bell housings different if they are the same transmission? My car is an 85 cutlass V6, and the new transmission apparently came from a grand prix. The cutlass transmission is the one with the "dip" at the top

There are 3 common GM bellhousing patterns....Chevrolet (left picture), BOP (right picture), and "corporate" which fits both

The trans bellhousing pattern has to match the engine used. The GP likely had a 305 Chevrolet in it. I would assume your Cutlass has a Buick 3.8?

You can use either a BOP case trans, or corporate case trans.

If I use an adapter plate, will the thickness of the plate cause issues with mounting the engine or the transmission in the car? Because then the total length of the whole engine and transmission assembly will be longer

There are no issues using the adapter plate in a stock to mild engine, there is a enough adjustment left in the trans mount and driveshaft to account for the thickness of the plate.

You may need a couple of washers to take up the space between the torque converter and the 3 attachment bolts to take up the space. I used one to put an Olds 350 in 94 Z71. You may need reduced head fasteners to get every bolt in the adapter and your bell housing. With a stock V6, the two bottom bolts that line up may be enough😁.
