I agree that a 4L80 is the way to go. when I built my 2004R it was all about keeping the 442 Olds powered with a factory drivetrain.
I considered this as well but at $500 for a 2wd core minimum, $500 for a controller, $200 for a good bell housing adapter and more $$$ for a shortened drive shaft and a different yoke. Then there is $500+ for nearly any converter. Plus so so gearing rounds out this expensive but very strong transmission.

So I purchased 4 factory Kent Moore service tools that a member on an Classic Olds suggested who just built one. First, the output shaft holder (J-29332), lo-rev clutch housing tool (J-28542), center support tools (J-29334) and direct/fwd drum tool (J-29337).

I'm following closely. I have a 2004r that I need to build for mid 400hp and I assume that's your goal also.

Yeah, should be 450 hp/tq pretty easily.

I plan on a stock rebuild, but these 200-4R rebuild threads are most enjoyable. Building it to hold some extra TQ and HP is great. And anything you can do to add to the reliability of a stock trans is also a win. Like drain back holes, etc.

Some more tore down. Does anyone know what comprises the Transgo No Yo Yo Guppy Reverse fix? I have seen it in two different 2004R's I have owned.

The transgo website has nothing on the YoYo reverse fix in detail. Says one of the things their shift kit with this in it corrects/prevents/reduces are "Slips or chatters in reverse hot". I've never used this, so no experience. But this is what I could dig up in a hurry...

Found this on MontecarloSS.com forum-

Hey Mike, here is an explanation I got from blackplague on turbobuick.com:

It's a recalibration kit from Trans co. Trans co is recalibration kits for the mass populous, and Trans Go is their perfromance line of kits.

That kit isn't to bad. The changes to the springs are the 2-3 shift valve, line bias, press reg, the tv line up {not tv limit}and i believe the 2-3 back out. The spacer plate holes are real conservative.

There is no drilling done to the valve body casting.

Found this on the Turbo Buick site explaining this little gem of yoyo reverse fix-

That plate is a "bandaid" fix for plates that are not flat. It puts tension on the support plate from the pan pressing down on it. I have never used one of those in my builds. I use the AXOD 5/16'' checkballs in all the "bathtub" positions and they energize faster when fluid is hot, than the stock 1/4 steel checkballs. It already has a hole in it for mounting.

That what I have found also, basically just a plate that may not do anything. I have been told by my local wrecker and my boss that regular TH2004R's failed around 130,000 Km back in the day. I am pretty sure both these transmissions were rebuilt at one point. Reverse always engaged perfectly on this one, drive was a different story, slow when cold.
