Hello all! New to the forum but have owned my 1980 El Camino since spring of 2012. I've been turning wrenches with my old man since I can remember and buying this ol' girl really let me explore the possibilities. Originally the "car truck" came with the infamous 229 chevy v6 and one of the previous owners tried to hop this thing up. (Noisy timing gears, aluminium intake, holley 390 cfm 4bbl carb and duel exhaust.) I haven't driven the beast all that much the last couple years, so in that time I decided its gonna get an implant. It took me about 2 years to build this small block. I just did the engine swap right before last winter. Well its the middle of June already and she is almost road worthy. I only have a few pictures right now but I can take more once I make some room in the garage and maybe dig some old ones up. So behold, the mighty mouse 283 in a G body!

Now before I hear people yelling from the back about JUST getting a 350, let me explain why i went with a 283. I love the early stuff, originally I wanted a 327 but at the time while I was looking, every 327 was entirely too pricey. The 283 swap will give me what I want to do with the elco. Cruise around town, head to car shows, and smoke the tires off every so often. And besides, the 350 swap has be done out by EVERYONE. I like to be a little different.

Welcome ElcoJOe; I'm surprised that you didn't bore it out to a 292? My first engine was a 283 bored .125" to a 301, 1963. The early 283's had thick cylinder walls an a 1/8" over bore was no big deal. Good luck, Ole' Bob.
Ps: I got some Rhoads lifters that you can have cheep if you decide to put a serious cam in it.

I had it bored .030 over to 287. Didnt want to go too crazy for just a cruiser. Though thats not a terrible idea. I have another 283 lying around, 1965 I think? Might have to look into that.
