So I spend the day installing the new license plate pocket and trim. It took a little tweaking and trimming to get the sides lined up exactly right but some filing and shimming it was good to go. I think it looks pretty nice. The shop got the color almost exact to what was on them originally.
Now the best part. About 14 years ago I bought a brand new gas tank. Came with the filler neck attached. Primed it, sprayed it and put it in. Never even put gas in it.
All this time its been sitting in the car with a small piece of rag stuck in the opening. No problems right ? NO SUCH LUCK !
Once the plate was on and everything was just about finished I put the cap back on. Looks great but the necks too long and the plate bracket wont go back far enough. UNBELIEVABLE !!!
Seriously, am I the only person this crap happens to ? SMH

That tank has a Buick Regal neck on it.

Same thing happens when you use a GN tank in a Malibu

You can adjust it a little to make it fit better

Damn... Looks like some tank "tweaking" is in your future. Either that, or add some poly washers behind the plate. That will bring the bottom out, and allow the top to lay back a little more. I couldn't tell until I saw the 3rd pic. What I did see is that F Body aluminum spare... Good luck.

Spacers behind the mounting bolts......

I thought about doing that but it needs to be pushed out pretty far. Plus at that point the plates going to be at a pretty strange angle and now its way forward of the LED lights.
Turna said its a Regal tank, I need to know for sure. If it is, I'll just spring for the right tank for the car. Its been up there for too many years to take it back.

There should be a sticker on it with a part number..........

But if you loosen the straps you should be able to wiggle it into a better position.

You may need 2 people

One to hold it and one to tighten the straps

I ran a GN tank when I had FI in my old Malibu.

Had the same issue but got it to fit better than that

I dont think I'll be able to move it enough to get that neck in. Its pretty far out. Im pissed. Ive had that tank for a long time. A really long time. Too long to go back to the place and complain. The guy probably ordered the wrong part number. Any labels on it were taken off when I painted it. Im pissed. I'd order a new tank but theyre out of stock at rockauto.
