Does anyone have a picture of the correct way the throttle return springs mount on a 86 Cutlass with the 307 in it ? My engine is idling a little high and the throttle doesn't appear to be closing all the way. I want to be sure my springs are in the right location.

Oh and one more question. Is there anywhere I can download a service manual for a 86 Cutlass for free?

Thanks guys

Olds used an ORANGE spring, which was a siamesed type double spring. 2 springs in one. It was a weird thing that wasn't a typical spring inside the spring. Hard to describe. You'd have to see it. GM p/n 22515041. Was on nearly every 260/307 from the late 70s to late 80s, but it's nowhere to be found anymore. Made of unobtanium and nobody I know of is repro'ing it.

Actually, it's in Turna's pic above. It's just painted black. But that's it. Only in its original state, it's orange. But you can use any double spring set up you like if it fits.

Any of the box parts stores carry throttle return springs.

Doubt you'll find an 86 service manual for free. Just spring for one. It's invaluable.

off topic but thanks, I put a set of Taylor wires on my GP and I thought they must have been the wrong set in the box cause a few were too long. I see from your engine that is the way they are. I'll be redoing a few at the distributor to shorten them

its possible your fast idle cam is holding your throttle open a bit. its located on the right side of the carb and is operated by the choke linkage.

oldsmobile joe makes a good point. Which also makes me think of this- does yours have an A/C solenoid kick up on it like in Turna's picture as well? If you have it in any mode where the compressor kicks in it will kick the idle up to compensate for the extra load of the compressor. Some people disable their compressor or remove it and leave the solenoid hooked up. Just another thing to check.

And reaching for straws here, but sometimes the carburetor hold down bolts are loose. Give them a quick check to see if they're tight. I've found them darn near able to loosen with your fingers before on aluminum manifold cars that have never been apart, so, there's that, too. Strangely, cast iron manifolds usually hold on to their carb mount bolts better, never had any loose on those.

thanks guys i will check those things out..

i looked real quick at it the other day and noticed a gap between the carb linkage and the solenoid, i pushed the throttle back to contact the solenoid and the idle dropped to where it should be. it didn't seem to be binding or anything so i thought weak spring or springs weak because they are in he wrong location.. i'll look closer at it today and install the new dorman springs i purchase yesterday... i'll also check the other stuff out while under there.. thanks again for the help. its appreciated..
