I set the timing on my car once before but now that I need to do it again I cannot remember how it goes. Maybe I do know but I feel like I'm overthinking it and I'm just confusing myself. Its an 85 buick 231 v6 ccc controled can someone verify this. The timing mark has an arrow pointing at 10-12 mark, i set the mark from the pulley to match it. Make sure the rotor is pointing just before the #1 plug on cap. Unplug the 4 wire ccc plug from distributor. Turn car on and adjust the timing. Turn car off, tighten distributor again and plug it back in. Is that right?? I found a thread months ago about how to but I cannot find it anymore.

Timing light? Sounds like you are confusing setting the timing and dropping the distributor for the first time?

I think that's my problem I was thinking of both procedures. I worked on it yesterday after work until the sunset but got frustrated because I couldn't get it to start anymore. I think I'm going to just start all over today. Pull the distributor back out and start from the beginning.

All good, sometimes you gotta step back for a minute. Stab the dist in like you were doing. pointing the rotor to #1. make sure the oil tab is lined up with the dist shaft.
Put the clamp on dist snug so it can still me moved. Unplug the 4 wire harness to set initial timing. Probe wire from your timing light to #1 Plug wire. Dial in the timing lock down the Distributor clamp, plug in your harness and your done.

Thank you, when I put the distributor back in do I line up the mark with 0 or with point thats between the 12-13 on the tab? Or is 12-13 the recommended dial in after distributor is in?

You don't have to line up those marks manually. You will see the mark move in the light of your timing gun, as you rotate the distributor. don't worry about that tooth your pointing at. Look on the balancer for the grooved line that's all the way across, if its hard to see, get some white out and fill the line. It will show up real nice in the pulse of your timing light

I used a black marker, it stood out over the rusty brown color of the pulley haha. I'll use white today to make it easier
