For the last 2 days I’ve been reading the old threads on this subject, but can’t find the answers that fit MY needs. My car is a 79 Elco, the front will have tubular control arms, 1/2 inch taller upper ball joints, 2000 Camaro brakes and spindles. The rear will be a G-Body Ford 9 inch, stock Gbody width with the Ford discs. I’m getting 17 X 8 wheels. I want to have some sidewall for a decent ride, so nothing below a 50 series. The wheels have a 4.5 backspce, 0 offset. So what would be the biggest size I can fit without having to do any mods?

Looks like a 215/55R17 might fit what you're looking for.

I thought our cars could take a taller tire especially the rear. Like a 255/60X17

I was thinking like a tire salesman with about stock height tires to match the width of your wheels & something with a sidewall like you want. Those look to be a good fit as long as you don't get too much drop in the suspension. This is from that link I posted:
255/60R17 tires have a diameter of 29.0", a section width of 10.0", and a wheel diameter of 17". The circumference is 91.2" and they have 695 revolutions per mile.
Generally they are approved to be mounted on 7-9" wide wheels.

Stock diameter was 26". Aim for that in the front, especially when lowered, to limit rub at full lock.

I really appreciate the chart ( Pagrunt) I’ve referred to it about 20 times already. Reading all the old threads on what other members have used makes it kinda confusing. I’m going to be getting Moog #s 5660 & 5413 springs for a close to stock height. I’ll go with the 215/55 X 17 on the front. Could I get by probem free using the taller say 255/60 X 17 in the back, or bigger?

I’m looking at 255/60 R17s for the rear on an 17X8 wheel. I’ve checked the size charts, would they fit problem free?

I believe those tires have a 10.04 in. section width. You should have about 5.5 in. from your drum mounting surface to your frame (my Regal does) With an 8 in. rim the tire is going to be 1.02 in. wider that the rim on both sides. 4.5 backspace plus 1.02 = 5.502 DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
