I have a 1987 cutlass with 14x6 rims what is the widest tire I can put on this rim. I have been told 225/60r14 is the widest

The 225 would fit,but you would have sidewall squat. That never looks good.

Bullhockey! I have 245/60/14's on my cutlass 14x6 cutlass rallye's. There is some sidewall bulge, but I've never had an issue with them popping off the bead. The fronts due rub a slight bit at full lock though.

I've had a couple imports over the years as daily drivers for economy, but I just don't get the whole "stretched" look!!!!

I have an ex coworker that did that to his mazdaspeed. It seemed at least once a week he would have a tire pop off the bead! I asked him if there was any benefit, to which he replied "you muscle car guys don't get what cool looks like"!!!!

Cool is when I'm busting your a$$ and then you have to pull over because the stupid little tires won't stay on the wheel lol!!!!

What I did in trying to find the right tire size was every g body I saw on road and in show was take pics, measure ride height, wheel and tire size
I made my choice and ended up with putting a small spacer on rear and I do have a little tire rub on front. If you want let me know and I will give you tire, wheel size and ride height

Does running a wider tire than recommended affect the footprint of the tire on the road?

235/60/14's here on factory restored 442 wheels. No issues whatsoever other than the occasional rub due to my car being lowered.

I have 235/60/14 on my cutlass. I think it looks awesome. You'll be fine with what everyone else recommended
