Question about stall converters. Im currently running a stock stall converter in my 455 powered 87 cutlass with mild cam. It has a th350 and stock rear gears. Im going to be putting in a 200-4r some day. Im wondering if the stall speed of my torque converter should be changed ?. what stall speed would be good.i would like input from people with some experience if possible

What are the stock rear gears? Raising the stall speed of the converter slightly will help acceleration but replacing the gears can help more. You also want to be careful with what your cruise rpm is compared to what the converter stall is if mileage is a concern.

What cam and what does it stall now?
I had two stock converters flash stall at 1600 rpm behind an Olds 350, pretty low. I would assume 2.56 or similar gears, check the trunk lid. People claim Summit's base converter stalls around 2000 rpm behind Big Blocks and Jeg's base TH350 converter slightly more. Both are around $100 as well.

depends on the cam and rear end gearing. I got my cam for my 455 from Dick Miller and he recommended 2000-2200 shall but that was with his grind so depending on what you have it could be higher or lower.

I have a Hughes GMBPO-25 between my Buick 350/th350. Rated at 2500 foot brakes to 2000 flashes to 26/27. 3.42 gears help.

the car was gift.so not sure of the rear gear ratio. it came with a v6. i'm in the process of restoring the car so unfortunately I sanded off all the sticker in trunk and on the doors ....stupid me. i'm just looking for a well rounded setup. it has a edelbrock cam, edelbrock intake ,750 carb, ehead with 3 angle valve job with 350 transmission. intended to be daily driver would like to do some highway driving not overly concern with gas mileage hoping the weight of car and size of engine will balance out when it come to the gas mileage. i have 96 suburban i don't mind feeding it so this want matter either.

thanks guys for your all your feedback it's greatly appreciated.

Yeah pick up the basic converter from Jegs or Summit, whichever you prefer. Either will help with fun and work ok with the 2 something gears.

Food for thought, with your present sent-up (assuming around 2.5 gears an 26" tires) your cruising around 2100rpm @ 65mph. With a 200-4r you will be around 1500rpm. I would leave the 350 trans in, I don't see the benefit of a 200-4r with your set-up. I hope you used Edelbrocks timing set with that cam also.
