Hello I’m looking for any help or advice on my car. I have a 1979 cutlass Calais 3.8l with a turbo hyrdamatic thm-350. I’m looking to replace the transmisson and was wondering what other transmisson could I fit in other than the one that’s already there. Within a couple months maybe a years tops I plan on replacing the 3.8 with a sbc 350. Is there anything I can use than will work with the 3.8 for now and when I swap engines will then also be compatible with the sbc 350? Anything helps

You have a BOP trans now, they generally don’t hook up to Chevy’s without an adapter . Someone who knows more may know if a newer trans is more universal across all GM engines.

Assuming that your 3.8 is a Buick, the 200-4r is the only option I'm aware of with a dual pattern bellhousing. Heads up, you'll want to regear the rearend if you move to an overdrive transmission.
This ^^ . Buy one from someone reputable or find someone local that can build you a core. A stock, properly built 200-4R can handle - 350hp 350sbc without issue.

Not the cheapest program because you will need to re-gear the rear end, but will be a serious performance upgrade, even to your 3.8.

Given that everything in the car is factor original once I get a 200-4R would I need to do anything to the transmisson itself? Then how would I go about regearing the rear end. What parts do I need or how should I go about this. Any recommendations are welcome open minded to this. Long story short I just want something that’ll take hp, quicker acceleration, and fuel economy. Like I said I do plan on installing a sbc 350 soon but just not now

It’s also gonna be a daily driver what gear would be best for that purpose highway and back roads
