Hey guys, been soaking up info at this site for a while now but still don't have a answer to my question.

My Cutlass Coupe is a 1978 and the previous owner swapped in a Olds 350. I got the car from impound after he got a DUI. After doing some work to allow the engine to make all of its HP again, I took it out on the highway and did a nice hard pull. Apparently my 350 is backed by a Turbo 200  I have broken many of the friction/clutch pads between each gear and now have to replace the trans if I plan to keep this sleeper around.

After reading on this site, it looks like a Turbo 350 will make a easy, trouble free, replacement. (I could be wrong so correct me if I am) But, Currently the only trans available to me is a TH400. I'm wondering if a 400 will fit and bolt up to my Olds 350 and still fit the '78 Body?

Re: Turbo-Hydramatic 350 or 400 fit?

I dont think the th400 will bolt up unless its a BOP Bell housing.

The th350 i beleive is a direct replacement.

The 400 you would need a new trans cross member and youll have to shorten the driveshaft

You'll also need to get a larger yoke put on your driveshaft to match the TH400.

Th350 trans if you insist on not having overdrive or 2004r if you are sane and want overdrive. Th400's are not needed behind mild 350's and will actually slow your car down over a th350. A very mild 350 engine will not give you enough get up and go without some gearing and when you get some gearing you need overdrive. People who drive on the street with steep gearing without OD are completely crazy  !

Re: Turbo-Hydramatic 350 or 400 fit?

Looks like the 400 is a big no go. I'll do some digging to find a TH350. I'm not too worried about OD because 90% or my driving is in town or up hill.

Will I need to look for a special type of TH350? or does any TH350 bolt up?

You just need to make sure the bellhousing on the TH-350 has the BOP bolt pattern instead of the Chevy bolt pattern. There are apparently some dual-bolt pattern ones out there as well.... I think.

Well bummer. I can't find a BOP TH350 or a multi-fit with-in 10 hours of where I live.

And I don't trust ebay.

Found a trans location. Only open week days.

Where are you located?
Maybe there is a member somewhere by you that just might be able to help you out. I once couldn't find a part for my 66 wildcat and as soon a I mentioned it on the Buick forum I found out there where 2 parts cars 5 minutes away from me.

Good luck.

Jegs and Summit sell fully remanufactured performance transmissions that come with a warranty. You can get the right bellhousing, a proper converter and other accessories all in one shot.

My Zip is 99403. i'm kinda on a time limit so If I can't find a trans by the end of the month I'll have to sell :(

I saw a th350 in the FS area of the site but shipping is spendy.
